Finding La Dolce Vita in Nerano...

Nerano is by far one of my favourite places in Italy. Situated on the Sorrentine Peninsula, perched on rocky cliffs overhanging the Tyrrhenian Sea, Nerano is an unspoiled treasure that perfectly captures the essence of "La Dolce Vita."

I first discovered Nerano in the 90s and it became my personal “solo retreat” location. When I needed a moment of solitude after a busy work week I would drive down from Rome along the A1, stop in Castellammare di Stabia, order a coffee and then, with the top down on my car, proceed along the winding coastal road, to my secret hideaway – The Locanda del Capitano (now renamed as the Taverna del Capitano) renowned for its signature Spaghetti alla Nerano – a carbonara with zucchini and still a secret recipe!  I would spend my mornings strolling, kayaking or swimming in the crystal clear waters and lunch on the jetty of Ristorante lo Scoglio on octopus salad, fresh sea urchins, mozzarella di buffala, or a locally caught fish Pesce all’acqua pazza.

This charming coastal village, recognised as a small and distinctive fishing enclave, offers eco-friendly, peaceful, and relaxing tourism, allowing visitors to connect with unspoiled and untamed nature, yet it is not without its marvels. Off the beaten track of typical tourist destinations, Nerano reveals hidden vistas that unlock the treasures of the Coast. Its geographic location places it in the most secluded and breezy part of the Sorrento Coast, boasting a pristine landscape with cliffs plunging into the sea and ancient olive groves of remarkable beauty. Nerano is situated just a short distance from the renowned Punta della Campanella, a promontory and marine protected area since 1997, marking the division between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast.

Exploring beyond Nerano, you’ll find hordes of equally enchanting towns, each with its own unique character and appeal. Just a short drive from Nerano, Massa Lubrense offers breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and the island of Capri. Known for its hiking trails, olive groves, and citrus orchards, Massa Lubrense provides a serene environment for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. Another nearby gem is Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi. Perched on a hilltop, this town provides panoramic views of both the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno. Renowned for its gourmet restaurants and tranquil atmosphere, Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi is a food lover's paradise, offering a range of culinary experiences from traditional Italian cuisine to modern gastronomic delights. A twenty three kilometre drive along the breathtaking winding coastal road will see you in the world famous town of Positano. Famous for its colourful cliffside villas, boutique shops, and lively art scene with its steep, narrow streets, Positano offers a unique and picturesque setting for those seeking a vibrant and dynamic environment. Its stunning views and charming atmosphere make it a perfect destination for a day trip or a romantic getaway.

One of the most compelling reasons to consider relocating to Nerano and its surrounding areas is the 7% flat tax incentive. This tax regime is available to new residents of specific southern Italian municipalities and is designed to attract foreign retirees and individuals seeking a peaceful and picturesque place to live. Under this scheme, eligible individuals can benefit from a flat tax rate of just 7% on their foreign-sourced income, significantly lower than the standard rates. This financial advantage makes Nerano an attractive option for those looking to maximise their retirement savings or enjoy a higher standard of living without the burden of high taxes.
